Brian K. Vaughan broke into comics in the late 1990s with Marvel Comics. He soon left his mark on various X-Books and the mini-series
Dr. Strange: The Oath, moving on to create The Hood (in a killer mature-audiences mini-series with Kyle Hotz) and
Runaways, his longest running Marvel work (and his best mainstream superhero work) to date. He is perhaps best known, appropriately, for co-creating
Y: The Last Man for Vertigo with Pia Guerra and
Ex Machina for WildStorm with Tony Harris.
Y: The Last Man is one of the best long-form serialized comic stories ever produced, a post-apocalyptic masterpiece about a man's discovery of himself and the forces that try to control him as humanity picks up the pieces after an unknown event wipes out nearly every male mammal on the planet, save Yorick Brown (our hero).
Y: The Last Man has one of the most beautiful endings of any comic series I've read, heart-breaking yet uplifting, and as a whole the series is widely considered one of the best comics ever, and perfect for those unfamiliar with the medium.
Ex Machina is Vaughan's finest work, and also his most challenging. Set firmly in New York City between 2001 and 2005,
Ex Machina is the tragedy of Mitchell Hundred, ex-superhero and now mayor of New York. The book is a fiercely political, realistic look at New York City and NYC politics. Possibly the best (only incidentally superhero) comic of the last decade,
Ex Machina is the heart-braking story about power, how far one will do to achieve it, and the lives that quest affects. The end of the saga seen in volume 10 will make you completely re-interpret everything that came before, an eye-opening sucker-punch that is guaranteed to send you back to the beginning to see the real tale Vaughan and Harris weave, a tale of betrayal, politics and personal lives set against the double backdrop of post-9/11 New York and an interdimensional conflict that has the fate of the universe in store. This is Vaughan and Harris's masterpiece.
